When condensate with high pressure and temperature is opened to a lower pressure environment, it tends to suddenly shed its excess enthalpy. When it enters a low pressure environment, some of the condensate evaporates and quickly reaches thermodynamic equilibrium with the new environment. The steam formed in this process is called flash steam (rotten steam). 

Since this resulting steam is low pressure, it can be used in applications such as processes that do not require high pressure, boiler feed water preheating, deaerator steam feeding, domestic or central heating water heating. 

One of the simplest and most efficient methods of benefiting from the flash steam generated in the condensate system is the use of a flash steam tank. The steam obtained with flash steam tank systems is used at many points in the business where low pressure steam is needed, fuel costs are significantly reduced.

The interior of the flash steam tank has an optimum design to separate the condensate and the resulting flash steam. Flash steam taken from the top flange of the tank can be fed to a suitable steam line or steam exchanger. Thus, additional savings are achieved by reducing both the energy consumption of the steam boiler and the costs of water conditioning. 

The most critical point of the flash steam tank system is the tank design suitable for the capacity. The success of the system and its high amount of energy gain depend on the path the condensate follows in the tank, the dimensions of the tank, the correct calculation of the pressure balance and the removal of the condensate from the tank at appropriate speeds.
